student support

The educational needs of the student are met through well-planned and well-executed lessons during regular class times and academic intervention provided by the Title 1 program.

The principal and faculty care for the physical and emotional needs of the students through the combine services of the school and outside agencies. One of their servies is the after-school program until five o'clock on most school days. This program gives parents the assurance that their children are in a safe environment after school. The students have time to play, eat a snack, and get help with homework.

Although there is no specific lunch program at the school the students are able to buy a special lunch each day along with juice and snacks. The students are taught to socialize in a polite and appropriate manner during lunch.

There is a nurse available to the students. This service is provided by the New York City Department of Health. Vision and hearing screening is done every year by either the Department of Health or teachers and volunteers.

A school psychologist is availalbe 2 days a week.

Many students walk to school. Some student take advantage of transit passes. Other use private bus companies.

student activities

Saint Gabriel School offers its students a wide variety of activities throughout the school year. Many involve the whole school and many are grade-level oriented.

Every month a student from each class is honored with the title "All Star." These students have their names posted on the opposite wall from those student who are being noted as having birthdays that same month.

The early childhood program highlights cultural celebrations, especially involving national foods. They enjoy celebrations of Halloween, May Crowning, St. La Salle Day, and other occasions. The early childhood hallway is ablaze with engaging decorations of seasons and observances.

One of the activities that involves the students of all grade levels is the annual mission collection to help support a school in Africa that is twinned with St. Gabriel School in a program sponsored by the Brothers of the Christian Schools.

Certainly, a highlight of activities at the school is the basketball program. Run by staff and volunteers, it engages boys and girls of all grade levels in an extensive program with the students of other schools.

A school track team for boys and girls has an indoor season and an outdoor season.
